Project 5: Topography
Versailles Garden and Palace
When the Chateau was built Versailles was a country village but now it is a wealthy suburb of Paris. The building used to host the French royal family and had a lot of political power until the royal family had to return to Paris in 1789 once the French revolution had began. The natural landscape surrounds the palace and reflects the power the building once represented. The large scale building on the site stands out and makes a bold statement just like the well kept crisp finished surrounding garden. If the Palace had been in the centre of a grass field the perception of history and importance it currently gives off would not have the same significance. Therefore the balance of the built and natural landscape is extremely important.
