Do you think that visiting a building can help you understand it better?
Visiting a building is the only way it can truly be understood. Yes a photograph and a description can help but the atmosphere, detail and a true understanding the spaces can only be noticed through seeing the building first hand.
How useful has it been to use critical thinking?
Throughout all modules critical thinking has been a crucial part of the course. It not only enables us to look at the good and bad aspects of our own design in order to improve but it also helps us to analyse other work. This is important to do because then inspiration can be taken from other architects work and reflected back into our own designs moving forward.
Have you learn enough about academic writing? Do you understand the relevance of it and the risk of plagiarism?
Yes, I fully understand the importance of plagiarism and the repercussions it can have. However I still can't say I am particularly strong when it comes to academic writing and I don't think I ever will be. Purely because I have little interest in that particular area. I know what I want to write in essays but I have never been able to word and structure this in a sufficient way.
Have you understood the relevance of researching when preparing a design project? Do you think you will use historical building when approaching a new design project?
researching a design is one of, if not the most important aspect of a project. If there is not a source from where a design has come from the all the work that has taken hours to complete is virtually worthless because the client will not be able to relate to the proposed solution. When stuck during the design process by looking at relevant precedence a solution can always be found. In the future I will only consider looking at historical buildings when approaching a design project if it is a specific requirement. This is the 21st century and therefore we should be looking for new innovative solutions and not looking too far back into the past for inspiration.
