Project 4: Observation Tower
Tower Of London
The tower of London is the most common name for this great landmark however it is actually called Her Majesty's Royal Fortress. The Tower Hill location on the north bank of the River Thames was discovered towards the end of 1066 as a part of the Norman Conquest of England. The castle was later built by William The Conqueror in 1078. The white tower which is located in the centre of two defensive rings containing walls and moats is 27m in height.

The Shard
The project first began in 1998 when Irvine Sellar was encouraged to redeveloped London Southwark towers and therefore began a partnership with Italian Architect Renzo Piano. This new development of the London bridge station area began in March 2009 and was formerly completed in July 2012 with the viewing gallery announced open to the public at the start of February 2013. The building towers 87 floors above ground level with 72 of the floor being usable and the remainder forming the top shards of glass reaching towards the sky but no quite making it. The Shard offered the public London's highest view of the surrounding city and beyond throughout a full 360 degrees. The viewing tower is situated on the 68th, 69th and 72nd floor. The materials for The Shard have been especially selected to blend in with the London sky line. which is unexpected for the building which is currently the tallest in Europe. The glass was tested and chosen to slightly reflect the changing colours of the London sky so that the building looks apart of the skyline.

Nottingham Council House
The Nottingham Council House is a good example of a building in Nottingham where the hierarchy is obvious when observing the surrounding buildings. The building is located just off of market square and is clearly the biggest boldest structure around with the large classical features of the building make a clear power statement. |
