A house for a Bipolar painter
Hawking Stephens is bipolar painter and portrait artist. He travels the world recording and painting the places and people he encounters through his visits. He is a hoarder and likes to work with found materials such as rubbish and labels (bus tickets, train tickets etc..) in his constructions. He suffers from the extremes of bipolar disorder ~ when he is hypermanic he needs calming confined spaces, when he is depressed he needs uplifting inspiring spaces.
Client: Hawking Stephens
Gender: Male
Occupation: Painter
Age: 25
Other information: has bipolar disorder, travels a lot, is a hoarder
Bipolar Disorder
As a result of his bipolar disorder he will suffer regular phases of depression and mania. These changes in mood cause a variety of symptoms, some of which will have a positive effect on his work and others a negative. This means he requires retreats within his house and studio where he can either express himself and work or escape from the stresses of everyday life. Being bipolar the smallest change in situations can trigger a change in mood and therefore it will be important to design calm and clutter free spaces.
Travel
Hawking travels around Europe regularly to get inspiration for his artwork. He will often go travelling once a month for a week with the money he has raised through selling his paintings. Whilst on his travels he will sketch scenes and photograph tourist attractions. He will collect and bring back small mementoes from his travels such as rubbish, labels, bus tickets, train tickets etc.
Art
The client is a portrait artist that occasionally uses the materials he’s collected on his travels to produce his artwork. He requires a studio space to produce his artwork as well as a gallery space to display and sell the work he produces. Due to his regular traveling it is important his work can be displayed to the passing public when the premises are vacant.
Building
It is important for there to be a main entrance and reception for the required gallery space. Two separate entrances are necessary, one private and the other public. This could be achieved by disguising the private entrance of situating it in a different location within the site. As there are two possible access points for the plot it would be possible to have one private and second separate public entrance. A tea/coffee shop is necessary for public use during the gallery opening hours which means it is also important to think about external spaces. Minimum requirements for the clients personal spaces are a bedroom with en suite, kitchen/dinning space, a lounge, storage facilities (collected items), and a studio.
