urban project: synthesis - on le Corbusier
How does le Corbusier want to replace natural/ traditional materials in architecture?
Le Corbusier wanted to replace tradition stone materials that used to be used in architecture with modern more effective materials such as steel beams and columns that are man made.
"A house will no longer be this solidity-built thing which sets out to defy time and decay, and which is an expensive luxury by which wealth can be shown; it will be a tool as the motor-car is becoming a tool"
I agree with every aspect of this statement. In the past a good quality house was only ever available if the family was from a wealthy back ground with land. Now everybody is able to access a comfortable functional home that works well just like a tool. House are built using modern materials that can be replaced and improved over time in order to stay in sync with the current styles. This means the solidity of old buildings is not necessarily achieved but the quality is still very much there.

Masion Citrohan
A Masion Citrohan was design specifically for mass production so it can be easily produced. It was designed with function in mind and to work like a machine with no faults. It is a three story masionette building made up of parking, garage, boiler room at ground level. On the second floor there is a double height living and dining space designed to be flooded with light. The roof terrace has the bedrooms and bathroom with balconies surrounding all floors. |
Le Corbusier's University Quarters
I like the idea that Le Corbusier had that very student should have there own private space with a chance to interact with there friends at a stones throw away. The idea that every student has their own personal small house with an outside roof terrace that everyone can afford no matter how rich or poor is also good. The only thing I do not agree with is the layout as it only allows buildings to be built one unit high therefore taking up excessive amounts of space that may not be available in some university locations.
