Historiography
Historiography refers to both the study of the methodology of historians and the development of "history" as a discipline, and also to a body of historical work on a particular subject
According to Salmon, ancient Rome was a source of inspiration for the architects of the 19c since it was possible to draw many analogies between these cultures.
I do agree with Salmon when he says that Rome was a major source of inspiration for architects because it was possible to draw many analogies of the existing architecture. I think this was architecture that all students admired and still do, as a result of it being easily accessible it was a good source of inspiration therefore making it easy to replicate the same style in other countries. If there had been any other styles of architecture that was a vast as the classical style found in Rome this may also have provided students will inspiration.
What is your opinion about using the past as inspiration in such a literal way?
I do not necessarily agree with the way British architects have taken inspiration in such a literal way, I do however think that architecture found in roam should be admired and used as precedence. For example the modernist way of using columns has still come from the Roman and Greek Classical style however there is not a distinctive relation so this I agree with.
Arkwright Building - Nottingham
The Arkwright Building was built by the Nottingham corporation in 1870 in a highly detailed gothic style. The building was bombed during the second world war by the Luftwaffe and many areas were turned to rubble. The structure was rebuilt to its original state and has now been renovated as part of a 90 million pound project for Nottingham Trent University.
